Finding comfort
Finding comfort during uncertain times can be challenging but incredibly helpful for maintaining a sense of balance. Here are five strategies that might help:
-
Create a Daily Routine
Even in unpredictable times, establishing a consistent daily routine can provide stability. Set regular wake-up, meal, and sleep times to give your day structure. Include activities that you enjoy, whether that's a cup of tea in the morning, a workout, or quiet time for reflection. -
Limit News Consumption and Social Media
Staying informed can be important, but excessive news consumption can amplify anxiety. Use reliable sources, and take breaks from the news to allow yourself mental space to recharge. -
Stay Connected with Loved Ones
Social connections are crucial for emotional well-being. Make time for phone calls, video chats, or in-person visits if possible. Sharing thoughts with family or friends can help you feel supported and remind you that you’re not alone. -
Focus on What You Can Control
Spend your energy on things within your control, like daily habits, self-care, and nurturing relationships. Setting small goals each day can give you a sense of accomplishment and direction, even if bigger things feel out of reach. -
Practice Mindfulness or Meditation
Mindfulness and meditation can help you stay present and grounded. Spend even a few minutes each day practicing deep breathing, and focusing on the present moment. This can help calm anxiety and create space between you and your worries.
These practices, taken together or separately, can help bring a sense of calm and control even during the most challenging times.
Here are some practical things to do as well.
Get outside - Take a walk in the forest or a park. Turn off your phone and focus on the beauty of nature.
Light a candle - One of the most comforting things to do is to see the light in the darkness. For comfort, I personally prefer warm and spicy scents like Cabin Fever. A combination of sweet orange and clove is so inviting and feels like a big hug.
Drink a cup of tea - There is something very comforting about having a cup of tea or another hot beverage of choice. I find this immediately calms my nervous system and helps me relax while I reflect on life.
Journal or write a letter (no need to send) - There is something very releasing about writing down how you feel. Writing, in general, can have a very comforting effect.
Taking time to slow down and savor simple comforts can have a powerful impact on our well-being. Whether it's connecting with nature, lighting a candle, sipping tea, or putting your thoughts on paper, these small actions help us find calm, comfort, and clarity amidst life's busyness.
