October Bucket List

As we settle into the cozy season, it's the perfect time to savor those little moments that make fall truly special. Here in Northern California, we’re kicking off October with a heatwave—not exactly how I’d prefer to spend my favorite month! I’d much rather be lounging in cozy sweaters and taking crisp fall walks. Luckily, I’ll get my chance this weekend when we escape to the mountains of Lake Tahoe.

Many of our candles are inspired by the mountains, especially Mountain Air—the woodsiest candle we make. It captures that pure, natural scent of a pine forest with a blend of pine, fir, and cedar. If you love the outdoors, this candle is a must. I keep plenty at our lodge in Truckee because it perfectly complements the mountain vibe.

Today, I’m writing from a cozy coffee shop in my hometown, and I want to share my special list of October must-dos to make the season even more memorable. Some are classic, but they’re still essentials for an extra special fall:

1. Visit an Apple Orchard – There’s still time to pick some apples and maybe even whip up some homemade apple cider. I like to keep a bowl of small apples on the dining table for the kids—perfect for snacking!

2. Go to a Pumpkin Patch – There’s a charming one nearby with live animals that we visit every year. It’s small but perfect for the kids. We’ll pick our pumpkins and, of course, take plenty of fun photos.

 3. Decorate for Halloween – We keep it light and fun for the kids, with bats, pumpkins they’ve decorated, and cute wooden ghosts, witches, and cats. To set the mood, we’ll light our new limited-edition Witch Potion candle, available only in October. It’s the perfect spooky scent for the season! We’re doing a pop-up in Orinda this Friday, so stop by if you’d like to smell it in person, or grab one online.

4. Buy Cozy Socks – There's nothing like slipping into a pair of soft, cozy socks to instantly make you feel at home during the chilly months. I love finding cute patterns or thick knit pairs that make lounging around feel extra special. Keep a few pairs by the fire or stashed in your fall wardrobe for the perfect comfort. Plus, they make great gifts if you're starting to think about the holiday season!

5. Take a Scenic Drive Through Fall Foliage – One of my favorite ways to truly embrace autumn is by taking a drive through the changing leaves. The vibrant oranges, reds, and yellows that cover the trees are breathtaking. If you can, roll down the windows, breathe in the crisp air, and let nature’s beauty inspire you.

6. Go to a Fall Festival – Nothing says fall quite like a festive gathering full of seasonal treats, music, and activities. Whether it's pumpkin carving, apple bobbing, or simply enjoying hot cider, fall festivals are a wonderful way to connect with your community and fully experience the season. I love strolling through these festivals with the family, grabbing something delicious from local vendors, and maybe even picking up some handcrafted fall décor for the house. If there’s one happening near you, don’t miss out!

7. Stop by a Farmers Market – Farmers markets in the fall are absolutely magical. From fresh seasonal produce like pumpkins, squash, and apples to artisanal breads and jams, there's always something delicious to bring home. I love chatting with local farmers and picking up fresh ingredients for cozy autumn dinners or weekend baking projects. Plus, many markets offer handmade crafts, and other goodies that are perfect for fall decorating or gift-giving. It’s a great way to support local businesses while stocking up on everything you need for the season!

8. Bake Something Delicious – Fall is the perfect time to get creative in the kitchen! Whether it’s classic apple pie, pumpkin bread, or a batch of spiced cookies, there’s something so comforting about baking when the weather cools down. I like to involve the kids by having them help with mixing or decorating. The best part? The house fills with the warm, cozy scent of whatever’s in the oven. Pair your baking with a hot cup of tea, and you’ve got a perfect fall afternoon.

9. Hit the Thrift Shop – Thrift shopping is a fall tradition for me! I love hunting for vintage sweaters, cozy blankets, and unique home décor to give my space a seasonal refresh. There’s something so satisfying about finding that perfect, one-of-a-kind piece—especially when it has a little history to it. Thrift stores are also great for inexpensive Halloween decorations or costumes, and you never know what treasures you might uncover. It’s eco-friendly and fun!

10. Trick-or-Treat – Even though my kids are still little, trick-or-treating is a highlight of the season for us. We keep it light and fun, with cute costumes and friendly decorations. Watching the kids get excited about dressing up and going door-to-door for treats always brings out the magic of Halloween. Whether you’re trick-or-treating with kids or simply handing out candy at home, it’s one of the best ways to embrace the festive spirit. And don't forget to light up your Witch Potion candle to set the spooky mood at home!
